Mussels in a Spicy Tomato Sauce

This nutritious and high protein dish comes together pretty quickly. Once cooked, all you need to do is pull the mussel from the shell with a fork, drag some crusty bread through the sauce and enjoy. It’s a perfect meal for a weeknight dinner or date night in, with a glass of wine. With only a small number of ingredients you can really impress your loved ones.  


  • 1kg  bag of pre washed mussels  
  • 2 cans of diced or crushed tomatoes (total 800g) 
  • 1/2 brown onion  
  • 1 garlic clove 
  • 1-2 red chilli 
  • 1 tsp sugar  
  • Pepper 
  • Parsley  
  • Baguette or bread of choice for serving  


  1. Dice the brown onion, finely chop the garlic and slice the red chilli  
  2. Add olive oil to a medium heated pan with the brown onion, garlic and chilli and cook for 2-3 mins  
  3. Add the canned tomatoes to the pan with the sugar and pepper 
  4. After 5 minutes add the washed bag of mussels to the pan and toss lightly in the tomato sauce. Being careful not to break the shells 
  5. Cover the mussels for 5 minutes on a high heat or until mussels have opened* 
  6. Serve with parsley and a baguette  
*discard mussels that haven’t opened more than 1cm
