R.M. Williams A/W17

The R.M.Williams A/W17 collection showcases the first seasonal range created by the iconic brand’s newly-appointed Head of Design, Jeremy Hershan.

The evolution of the R.M.Williams A/W17 collection began in the birthplace of the brand – in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. The storied heritage and engrossing archive unearthed here by Head Designer Jeremy has embedded A/W17 with a distinctive character and sense of purposeful detail, re-establishing the brand’s DNA and decoding the future.

In addition to the original back catalogue, Australian master photographer Max Dupain’s portraits from the 1930s to the 1970s informed and provided much of the inspiration for A/W17. Dupain’s subjects portray a sense of rugged elegance and quiet stoicism that resonate strongly with the brand’s ethos.

“The AW17 collection, for me, was about going back to the heart of the brand’s DNA,” Hershan said. “I spent a week in the Flinders Ranges, which was the birthplace of the brand. I looked at the photography of Max Dupain, who for me captured these masculine entrepreneurial characters all the way through from the ‘1930s to the ‘1970s, so I referenced that quite heavily. I also looked at the art of Tom Roberts, who was one of Australia’s most prolific impressionist painters. His sense of light and sensitivity for colour really lent itself to the brand for me and gave me a unique platform for interpreting Australian colour.”

The colour palette for the season takes its cue from the rich natural shades and unique sense of light that filters through the Flinders Ranges, as well as from the works of Australian impressionist painter Tom Roberts.

Bone, stone, pale smoke, ochre, russet, deep red and oxblood, heathered Loden, olive drab, British khaki, tobacco, tan, chestnut and chocolate, sky blue, indigo and deep navy form the basis of the house and the seasonal colour palette.
